Insomniac Games’ upcoming PS5 exclusive, Marvel’s Wolverine, is currently being panned by some critics across different review sites. These reviews criticize some fundamental issues found within the game.
The reviews on Metacritic currently sits at a 78 score, this would be one of the lowest rated PlayStation first-party games in years, and among the lowest since Days Gone in 2019.
The reviews seem to dislike the combat and the navigational system the most. They mention that the game has repetitive and basic combat, and that it doesn’t really do anything special, seemingly just a basic fight system. Other reviews point towards the game’s way of showing you around, with some showing very obvious map guidance that an average gamer should see with no issues.
What is interesting is most of the less-positive reviews are mostly focused on the fundamentals ad gameplay, not as much the story or the narrative angle. The only ones we have seen so far is belief that the story is pretty casual and the fact that there are no side quests. The story of the game seems to get a bit less scrutiny among reviewers.
Marvel’s Wolverine has been a highly-anticipated PS5 game for years, as fans have been excited for it ever since that epic PlayStation Showcase in 2021 that shared the teaser trailer for the game. It has come a long way since then, but the reviews are pointing towards a lot of missed opportunities from Insomniac.
For reference, Insomniac’s other Marvel games, the Marvel’s Spider-Man games, all received Metacritic scores of at least 85 or above, with Spider-Man 2 even reaching the 90 mark.
The game is still a few days away from release, so gamers will have to decide for themselves if these reviews are accurate or not. One thing is certain, this game has been a long-time coming. It is still a great thing to have it finally releasing after all the development troubles it had. Either way, this should be seen as a win for Insomniac Games.
