Expanding Horizons: How Wuthering Waves Won Over a Global Audience Through

Wuthering Waves is now more than two years old, but somehow, it’s bigger and more popular now than it ever has been.

According to SteamDB, Wuthering Waves – affectionately referred to as WuWa – achieved a new concurrent player count on Steam this year in conjunction with its 3.4 update, which featured the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners collaboration. More notably, the game topped Steam’s US Top Sellers chart multiple times in 2026, while its latest Version 3.7 update reached No. 1 on Steam’s Global Top Sellers chart on launch day.

That’s not the case for most games. Games often release to high player numbers that dwindle over time – even popular live service titles with regular updates. However, Wuthering Waves’ performance on Steam shows that the game continues to inspire strong player engagement.

Content Expansion Through Consistent Updates

Developer Kuro Games’ update cadence has been the foundation of Wuthering Waves’ continued vitality. Since its launch on May 23, 2024, WuWa has maintained a steady, high-frequency version update cycle. It delivered ten version updates, adding over 60 hours of new storylines for players to follow, more than 100 square kilometers of new maps to explore, and more than 30 new events and gameplay innovations since October 2025.

The game enjoyed an even bigger collaboration with CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk: Edgerunners this Summer. This brought Lucy and Rebecca from the anime series into WuWa along with two new Cyberpunk-themed areas, Night City and the Moon, as well as the Adam Smasher boss. The story feels like a true epilogue to the anime, and so many viewers called it “Edgerunners Episode 11” that the nickname stuck.

This expansive collaboration encouraged many Cyberpunk: Edgerunners fans to jump into WuWa, but not only that, but Cyberpunk 2077 achieved its highest concurrent player count since the release of Cyberpunk 2077 Update 2.0 and the Phantom Liberty expansion in 2023. This kind of synergy in a collaboration is rare, as Paweł Sasko, associate game director at CD Projekt Red, explained, “We have done [a] bunch of collabs in the past, small and huge, and I have never seen [a] response this insane from the community.”

Beyond this milestone, major patches continued throughout the year. Since Version 3.0, the Expedition Motorbike has added exploration distinct from Flight, enabling free riding, music playback, and activity discovery across the landscape while offering 16 Collaboration Liveries in that time, including crossovers from Persona 5, Resident Evil, and Sonic the Hedgehog, further expanding personalization.

Version 3.1 introduced the new character Aemeath, whose unique mech form significantly broadens combat variety. Players switch in real time between her human and mech forms, each offering distinct movesets. Her mech form also works in the open world for traversal. This gave combat a new dimension without replacing existing styles.

A Smoother Path for Players

As the game’s content and player base continue to grow, enabling more people to access and enjoy it smoothly has become another important part of Wuthering Waves’ long-term operations.

In 2026, the Wuthering Waves team implemented nearly 300 improvements, many of them inspired by player feedback, spanning character progression optimizations, visual enhancements, and performance improvements. More than 20 updates to the Echo and progression systems streamlined the process of building characters, while graphics and performance upgrades improved the game’s experience across a wider range of hardware.

Kuro Games has also continued to optimize the game client. Version 3.7 introduced tiered resource downloads, with Ultra, HD, and Smooth options on PC, and HD and Smooth options on iOS and Android. Each tier offers a different balance between file size and visual quality. On PC, the storage difference between the Ultra and Smooth options can reach around 30GB, giving players more flexibility based on their hardware, available storage, and preferred experience.

Building on these changes, the team continued to optimize performance on mobile devices, while PC players seeking higher visual fidelity can utilize NVIDIA DLSS to further enhance image quality. Meanwhile, Kuro completed a major overhaul of the game’s underlying C# codebase across all platforms. Implemented seamlessly without interrupting live game stability, this long-planned foundational upgrade delivers tangible efficiency gains—allowing players to explore Solaris-3 with greater stability and fluidity.

The game’s platform availability and language support have also continued to expand. With the launch of the Xbox version, Wuthering Waves is now available across Xbox, Epic, PS5, Steam, PC and mobile devices. This year, the game also received Thai and Brazilian Portuguese localization, and more languages are set to come in 2027, making WuWa a truly global phenomenon. These languages are in addition to the current options, which include English, French, German, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Traditional Chinese, and Simplified Chinese, bringing the total number of localized languages up to ten.

For players around the world, the practical impact of these changes is straightforward: whether the game runs on the devices they use every day, and whether they can understand its story and systems in a familiar language, can determine whether they are truly willing and able to step into this world.

Keeping the Conversation Going Between Updates

Kuro has made player communication a regular part of the version cycle. Ahead of each major update, patch notes, Developer Messages, and Developer Notes explain the background behind key changes, respond to player feedback, and outline the thinking behind specific design decisions. Multilingual preview livestreams show new gameplay in action, while in-game surveys and rapid iteration help the team track player reactions after each update goes live. As a result, players can see what has changed, why those changes were made, and how earlier feedback has shaped later versions.

Discord supports the more day-to-day side of that conversation. The official server brings together more than one million members, who use dedicated channels for game guides, fan content, and regional co-op to share character-building and combat strategies, showcase their creations, find teammates, and continue discussing each update.

On the official Wuthering Waves server, Kuro introduced Abby, a dedicated bot that helps players compare builds and evaluate team compositions. Abby has been activated more than 700,000 times. Discord Widget integration also lets players display their in-game progress and favorite characters on their profiles, with more than 400,000 activations.

Build discussions, team strategies, character preferences, and anticipation for upcoming versions all come together in the same community space. Even when players are not logged into the game, they can still stay involved through discussion, sharing, and profile customization.

That gives each update cycle a longer tail. Before a new version arrives, players discuss previews and character builds. Once it launches, conversation shifts to strategies, team compositions, and story developments. As events wind down, attention begins to move toward the next update. The connection between the game and its community does not end when the latest story chapter or event closes.

From the Screen to the Real World

This commitment to refining the player experience extends well beyond the game itself. Outside the digital realm, Wuthering Waves has brought two of its most distinctive elements—music and combat—into a wider range of settings for players.

Music is an integral part of Wuthering Waves’ storytelling. Character themes are woven into battles, exploration, and pivotal story moments, connecting each character’s visual identity and abilities with their personal journey. As the narrative unfolds, these melodies gradually become a way for players to remember the characters and stories they have encountered.

The “To The New World” global concert tour brought the game’s music to the live stage. Featuring a full band, guest vocalists, stage lighting, and dynamic visuals, the tour reimagined the storylines and character arcs that players had experienced in the game. It traveled to Shanghai, Tokyo, Seoul, Taipei, Singapore, and Los Angeles, attracting a combined audience of nearly 50,000. When music once heard during an individual gaming experience filled a concert hall, personal memories of the game were transformed into live moments shared by thousands.

The distinctive combat of Wuthering Waves offers another form of connection. Its fast-paced action, high skill ceiling, precise feedback, and visually striking presentation make it naturally suited to spectating and discussion. “Holographic Overdrive 2026” built on these strengths by turning them into a competitive event spanning both online and offline formats.

From Southeast Asia’s online qualifiers and the livestreamed finals in Bangkok to a collegiate tournament tour across North America, the competition gave highly skilled players a stage on which to showcase their mechanics and strategies. It also enabled a broader audience to watch, learn, and discuss different approaches to combat. Hundreds of competitors took part, while related content generated more than 75 million online impressions.

Beyond concerts and tournaments, Wuthering Waves has also created opportunities for players in different regions to meet through anniversary celebrations, gaming conventions, and fan-creation events. At the second-anniversary celebrations held at Makuhari Messe in Tokyo and KINTEX in South Korea, developer panels, cosplay competitions, and fanwork showcases were brought together under one roof.

Players came not only to learn about future updates, but also to share their own interpretations of the game’s characters and world. The Los Angeles anniversary celebration and a dedicated 2,000-seat panel at Anime Expo 2026 drew large numbers of North American players. The game also appeared at gamescom asia x Thailand Game Show 2026, further expanding its presence across Southeast Asia.

These events have taken many forms—from developer presentations and live performances to cosplay, fan creations, and competitive tournaments. Players may initially discover the game through a particular character, battle, or collaboration, but as discussions, creative projects, and offline events continue to grow, the ways in which they engage with Wuthering Waves become increasingly diverse.

From concerts and competitive tournaments to gaming conventions, these events collectively extend the game experience into the real world. Its characters, music, combat, and worldbuilding are increasingly becoming a shared language through which players connect and create.

That’s why Wuthering Waves is stronger than ever in 2026. It’s not because of a single collaboration, event, or update. It’s a culmination of everything that goes into making a live service game that resonates with the audience, and turns players into fans for life. Wuthering Waves is one of the best live service RPGs you can play in 2026, and there’s never been a better time to get started.
